The Stationery Budget Edit - Episode 1: How Much Should You Budget for Wedding Stationery?

Wedding stationery is one of those parts of wedding planning where it can be difficult to know what to expect when it comes to cost.

You might have a clear vision for your invitations, a Pinterest board full of beautiful on-the-day details, or simply a list of essentials you need to organise. But how much should you actually budget for wedding stationery? And what influences the price?

Welcome to The Stationery Budget Edit, a series from FM Digital Design exploring the costs behind bespoke wedding stationery, what affects pricing and how to make your stationery budget work for your wedding.

My aim is to make wedding stationery pricing easier to understand, so you can make informed decisions and feel confident about where your budget is going.

What should you include in your wedding stationery budget?

The first step is to establish what you actually need. Wedding stationery can cover much more than invitations, and not every couple will require every item.

Depending on your plans, your stationery budget might include:

  • Save the dates: Particularly useful if you're planning a destination wedding or getting married during a busy time of year.

  • Wedding invitations: The main invitation, potentially accompanied by RSVP cards, information cards or other inserts.

  • Envelopes and finishing details: From envelope liners and wax seals to ribbon, belly bands and other decorative touches.

  • On-the-day stationery: Place cards, menus, table names or numbers and other details that help guests navigate your reception.

  • Wedding signage: Welcome signs, seating plans, order-of-the-day signs and other displays that bring your wedding styling together.

Before requesting quotes, make a list of the items you consider essential, those you'd love to have, and anything that's optional. This gives you a starting point without committing to details you may not need.

What affects the cost of wedding stationery?

There isn't one fixed price for bespoke wedding stationery because every design, order and couple is different.

Here are some of the main factors that influence the final cost.

1. Quantity

The number of items you order will affect your overall spend. Invitations are often sent per household rather than per guest, while on-the-day items may be needed for every individual guest or table.

Work out your quantities carefully before ordering. This can help prevent unnecessary spending and reduce the risk of discovering that you haven't ordered enough.

2. Materials and print finishes

The paper or card you choose, the printing method and any additional finishes can all influence the price.

A simple printed invitation and an invitation featuring layered card, specialist finishes or decorative embellishments will have different production requirements. Neither is inherently better; it comes down to the look you're hoping to achieve and what matters most to you.

3. Design time

Bespoke stationery involves more than putting names and dates onto a piece of card. The design process includes developing a concept, considering typography and layout, creating a cohesive look and refining the details to suit your wedding.

At FM Digital Design, design is charged separately from the physical stationery and production labour. This means the time spent creating your design is accounted for rather than being hidden within the cost of the finished item.

4. Production labour

Once a design is approved, there may still be considerable work involved in bringing it to life. Depending on the order, this can include printing, trimming, assembling, finishing, personalising and preparing items for delivery.

These tasks take time, and that time forms part of the cost of producing bespoke stationery.

5. Finishing touches

Small details can make a noticeable difference to the overall look of your stationery. Envelope liners, wax seals, ribbon and layered elements can add texture and refinement, but they may also introduce additional material costs and production time.

If your budget is limited, consider choosing one or two details that will have the greatest impact rather than adding every possible extra.

How much does wedding stationery cost?

The most useful starting point is to look at the individual items you need, rather than relying on a single average figure for wedding stationery.

At FM Digital Design, individual pricing allows you to build an order around your own requirements. Here are three examples of prices to help you start planning:

Wedding invitations - £2.00 each

Place cards - £1.25 each

A1 Wedding signage - From £55

These prices reflect individual items and are intended as a starting point. Your final quote will depend on your requirements, including the design and production work involved.

What could that look like for your wedding?

Let's imagine you're planning a wedding with 50 guests and need invitations, place cards and a sign.

  • 50 invitations: £100

  • 50 place cards: £62.50

  • One sign: from £55

That gives an illustrative total of £217.50 for those items at the prices shown.

However, this isn't a complete quote for a bespoke stationery order. Design fees, production labour and any other applicable costs are charged separately, so these would need to be added to establish your final budget. Your choice of sign and any additional requirements may also affect the total.

The purpose of this example is to show how quickly individual items can add up, and why it's useful to consider both the physical stationery and the work involved in creating it.

You can explore the individual options available through the FM Digital Design services and pricing page.

When comparing quotes from different stationers, make sure you're comparing like for like. One quote might include design time, while another may charge for it separately. Some prices may include envelopes or finishing details, while others may list these as additional costs.

It's also worth checking whether production labour, delivery, revisions and additional design changes are included.

A lower starting price doesn't always mean a lower final cost, so understanding exactly what's included is essential.

Where can you save without compromising on the details?

If you're working to a set budget, there are ways to make thoughtful choices without losing the overall look and feel of your wedding.

Prioritise the essentials. Start with the stationery you genuinely need, then decide which additional pieces would add the most value to your day.

Keep your design cohesive. A consistent colour palette, typography and design style can create a polished look across your invitations and on-the-day stationery without requiring every item to have an elaborate finish.

Be selective with embellishments. Choose the details that matter most to you. A beautiful envelope liner or a considered ribbon detail can make a statement without every item needing multiple decorative finishes.

Be realistic about quantities. Check your guest list and table arrangements before confirming your order. Accurate quantities help you avoid unnecessary spending.

Ask questions before approving your quote. Make sure you understand what's included, how revisions work and whether any additional costs could arise. A clear quote helps you plan with confidence.

Why transparency matters at FM Digital Design

I believe understanding what you're paying for should be just as important as loving the final result.

Bespoke wedding stationery is a combination of design, materials, production and attention to detail. By separating design costs and production labour from the cost of the physical items, I want to make those different elements clearer for couples.

Not every couple will have the same priorities or budget, and that's absolutely fine. My aim isn't to suggest that every wedding needs elaborate stationery. It's to help couples understand their options and decide what feels right for them.

Over the coming posts in The Stationery Budget Edit, I'll be exploring wedding stationery pricing in more detail, looking at what influences costs, how to plan quantities and where different choices can affect your overall spend.

Whether you're just starting to plan or finalising the details, I hope the series helps you make informed decisions with confidence.

Because your stationery should reflect your wedding, your priorities and your personality — and you should understand the cost behind it.
